ODOT Grant Awarded for Yamhelas Westsider Trail

May 31, 2013

In the fall of 2012, the Friends of the Yamhelas Westsider Trail (FYWT) worked in conjuction with the Yamhill County Parks Department in submitting a grant application to the Oregon Department of Transportation for the purpose of acquiring the 17 mile abandoned rail right-of-way from Union Pacific Railroad. In the spring of 2013 we were awarded $1.4 million through the Federal Transportation Enhancement (TE) Grant Program. In May, the project got another big boost when the Yamhill County Commissioners unanimously agreed to provide the required 10.27% match.

The TE grant and funds from Yamhill County will purchase approximately 10 miles of the rail corridor, so we're well on our way. Thursday, Feb. 27, the Yamhill County commissioners approved spending $16,000 to have the remaining seven-mile portion of Yamhelas Westsider Trail rial right-of-way appraised. A formal appraisal is necessary to support application for grant money for the remaining section, according to County Administrator Laura Tschabold.
